Aviation Museum

With the directive of İrfan Tansel, the idea of establishing an air museum in Turkey came to the agenda and for this purpose, an order published in 1963 was asked to protect a number of aircraft used in the Air Force and other troops. As a result of the studies, the Air Museum Organization was established in 1966 and in May 15, 1971, Turkey's first air museum was opened at İzmir Cumaovası Civil Airport. Despite the great interest in the opening, due to the distance to the city center and transportation difficulties, the desired level could not attract the attention of visitors at the desired level has been looking for a new settlement for the air museum. Since the repair of the Cumaovası runway, the development of the square for educational flights and the use of this square for civil air traffic has caused new problems in terms of resettlement and settlement, the Air Museum has become more appropriate. The Air Museum continued its activities in İzmir-Cumaovası until 1978. As a result of the examination, the position, visitor potential, development and maintenance facilities, the place where the first air unit was established and the historical importance of the most suitable settlement area for the Air Museum near the Air Force Academy in Istanbul-Yeşilköy military It strengthened the idea of making the decision to deploy in the adjacent area of the airport.
The construction of the new Air Museum building was started in 1977 due to the reasons described above and completed in 1983. In the understanding of modern museums, the interior architecture and decoration of the museum, which was built on a total area of 65 thousand square meters covering 2 thousand 365 square meters closed and 12 thousand square meters of open exhibition areas and on October 16, 1985, the Air Force Commander Gen. Halil Sözer was opened to visitors.
