Damlataş Cave was discovered in 1948 during the opening of a quarry for stone to be used in the construction of the harbor. The cave is on the west coast of the historical peninsula. There is a 50-meter passage at the entrance of the cave. After the passage, which is 15 meters high, there is a cylindrical cavity. From here, one descends to the bottom of the cave. The stalactites and stalagmites of the cave, which is located in the side crystallized limestone, were formed in 15 thousand years. The cave was named Damlataş because of the drops of water that continue to drip from the stalactites.
A favorite of local and foreign tourists, Damlataş Cave is famous for its mesmerizing beauty as well as its air, which is good for asthma patients. Under the supervision of a doctor, there are patients who apply a 21-day treatment cure by sitting in the cave for a certain period of time.
The air in the cave does not change in summer and winter; the temperature is 22 degrees Celsius, the humidity is 95 percent, and the constant pressure is 760 mm. The air of the cave contains 71 percent nitrogen, 20.5 percent oxygen, 2.5 percent carbon dioxide and some radioactivity and ions. Entrance to the cave is chargeable. There is a small bazaar around it and in front of it is a beach.
