Gaziantep Archeology Museum

Gaziantep Archeology Museum is located on the Istasyon Street and has an interesting and rich collection created by archaeological excavations and purchasing method. The history of establishing a museum in Gaziantep, which has been inhabited continuously since the Lower Paleolithic Period, dates back to 1944. In 1969, the Archeology Museum, located on Istasyon Street, was exhibited and put into service. The museum's enrichment in terms of artifacts and the mosaics unearthed from Zeugma Ancient City were exhibited in the Archeology Museum for a while, resulting in a lack of space. It was reopened to visitors on May 18, 2017 by using innovations and modern exhibition methods, expanding the exhibition areas.

Gaziantep Archeology Museum takes visitors on a historical journey from the past to the present with its exhibition units from the Lower Paleolithic Period to the Republican Period. This journey starts from the ground floor and extends to the Republic Period according to the order of historical periods. On the walls on the ground floor, the historical periods of Gaziantep and the names of Gaziantep in history are visually presented to the visitors.

The exhibition, which started with the Geological Period fossils and rocks, continues with the striking display of the features of Gaziantep's Natural History and Lower Paleolithic period. Extinct skeletons of the extinct Maraş Elephant are also exhibited in the museum. Right next to the Paleolithic Period unit, it continues with the stone sculpture display of the Neolithic Period, which is one of the most important periods in history and shaped the history of humanity.

 

In the section representing the Chalcolithic and Old Bronze Age of Gaziantep the Saraga, Sakçagözü, Gedikli, Tilmen, Zincirli and Sam finds uncovered by archaeological excavations are exhibited. A tomb belonging to the Old Bronze Age has been revived and exhibited together with its finds. The late Hittite Period, which is one of the most important periods in Gaziantep, is reflected to the visitors on the ground floor of the museum with the characteristics of the period. Carchemish Ancient City finds are also exhibited here. In this section, the palace structure of the Late Hittite Period was exhibited by replicating the orthostats exhibited in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. In addition, in this section, the characteristics of the Bit Hilani plan type, architectural understanding, which is a building type of Anatolian/Northern Syria origin and which was widely used in public architecture in Anatolia, Syria, Palestine, Western Iran and Mesopotamia in the Iron Age.

On the first floor of Gaziantep Archeology Museum, Anatolian civilizations, stamps and cylindrical seals, Dülük Ancient City and stone artifacts, Iron Age, Persian Period, Commagene Kingdom and jewelry are exhibited. On the ground floor of the museum, important finds of the Classical/Hellenistic and Roman Periods of Gaziantep, sculptures made of limestone, grave steles, and a family burial chamber belonging to the Roman Period are also exhibited.

Some of the Zeugma clay seal impressions, coins, and finds from the Gaziantep Islamic Period and Ottoman Periods, found in the Zeugma Ancient City excavations, are also exhibited here. In the garden of the museum, there are basalt stone relief stelae belonging to the Hittite and Late Hittite Periods, tombstones, Roman sarcophagi, and pieces of stone architectural works belonging to various structures.
