Kariye Mosque
Kariye Mosque is a church structure dedicated to Jesus, which forms the center of the Khora Monastery, a large building complex during the Eastern Roman Empire. Due to the fact that it was outside the walls of Istanbul (Constantine), the name of Khora, which came to the building out of the city and the rural area, was deemed appropriate. Kariye is the Turkish state of this name.
Although the construction date of the building was not predicted, it is known that in the 6th century, Emperor Justiniaus (527-565) was rebuilt instead of a ruined chapel outside the city. Since it was near the Blackhernal Palace during the Kommenos Period, the church was used as a palace schedule in important religious ceremonies.
During the conquest of Istanbul, the structure was not damaged, Sultan II. During the reign of Beyazıd, the Grand Vizier Hadım Ali Pasha was translated into a mosque in 1511 and a madrasah was added to him. The Kariye Mosque was transformed into a museum in 1945 with the decision of the Council of Ministers.
The building, which was destroyed by the monastery structures outside the church and disappeared over time, attracts attention with its architecture and mosaic and frescoes in Eastern Roman art.
The museum was transformed into a mosque with the decision of the President dated 20 August 2020 and numbered 2840.
